Albirex progress in a bore win against Yotha

Albirex Niigata  1 (Sato 75”)
Yotha FC (Laos) 0
In a boring affair at the Jurong East Stadium, Albirex needed a free kick from Masatake Sato to break the deadlock against Laotian League Champions Yotha FC and progress to the next stage of the RHB Singapore Cup.
It was a sign of things to come from the first minute on when Albirex had the lion’s share of the possession but maintained a cautious approach towards the Laotians who did not have a single foreigner in their squad. They did however have Lamnao Singto who used to turn out for Thai Premier League side Buriram PEA.
The White Swans had the occasional surge towards the Yotha goal but were mostly contented to sit back and stroke the ball around with S-League All Star Atsushi Shimono directing the show from the centre of the park.
However on occasions when Albirex did threaten the Yotha goal, custodian Sourasay Keosouvandeng was up to task. Sho Kamimura tested him out with a rocket in the 16th minute but the Yotha keeper kept it out for a corner. Hidekazu Yamamoto was the next to test the keeper after bursting through from a through ball from midfield but the resulting one on one saw Keosouvandeng denying Albirex again.
The second half started in the similar fashion with Albirex still controlling possession but Yotha finally started to apply pressure on the Japanese with forays forward whenever they regained possession. The first shot of the game for the Laotians came in the 49th minute when Sompong Manivanh forced a one on one save from Takuma Ito.
In the 51st minute, Yotha defender Saynakhonevieng Phommapanya started a mazy run forward into the Albirex half which saw the ball end up at the feet Phuttavong Sapackdy. The Yotha midfielder did not need any invitation to fire a good shot after finding himself in acres of space in the Albirex area but Takuma Ito was alert and kept the shot out.
The only goal of the game finally came at the 75th minute when Phommapanya fouled an Albirex player near the penalty area. The resulting free kick curled in by Masatake Sato was out of reach for the Yotha keeper and was all that was needed to give Albirex the win.
Confident
Speaking to the press after the game via a translator, Albirex gaffer Koichi Sugiyama said he was always confident of winning the tie within 90 minutes of normal time and was pleased with the way his charges created chances despite the lack of goals. He also added that his boys will now be going away for a much needed break before coming back for training next weekend.
Learning Experience
Yotha FC coach Somsack Keodala was also pleased with his team’s performance despite Albirex being the strongest team his side has ever faced. He was glad to have the chance to face the Japanese side and it proved to be a worthy learning experience. Given the opportunity he would like to return to next year’s edition of the RHB Singapore Cup.
Albirex Niigata Singapore will next take on Tampines Rovers in the next round of the RHB Singapore Cup.

Albirex Line UpIto(GK), Kawakami(C ), Yamashita, Shimono, Matsui (Hotta 80”), Okuyama (Shiratori 90+2”), Kamimura, Soya, Sato, Ito, Yamamoto (Ichikawa 58”)

RHB SINGAPORE CUP: YOTHA SET FOR TASTE OF JAPAN

One of the most interesting fixtures in this season’s RHB Singapore Cup preliminary round is also the last to be played, namely the match at Jurong East Stadium on Saturday evening.

Both teams will be strangers to one another when they meet, and each of hosts Albirex Niigata (Singapore) and Yotha FC, the first Laotian club to play in this competition, will be entering into the unknown.

The opposing coaches have tried to find out as much as they can about one another, with minimal success, and on the night it is going to be a matter of making adjustments as they go along, should either find things that surprise them.

For White Swans coach Koichi Sugiyama, a brief Youtube clip of Yotha captain Lamnao Singto, who is a member of the Laos national team, is all that is available.

“I saw their No.8, very good player!” said Sugiyama.

The coach of the Yotha side, Somsack Keodala, who works with senior-turned-assistant Bounlap Khenkitisack, knows only what he has seen in brief clips on the Albirex website and what a Japanese coach he knows from Japanese Football Association coaching courses he has attended has told him.

“They are very fast and skilful, and their tactics are good,” he acknowledged.

“It’s going to be very interesting to play against them, as none of us have ever played a Japanese team before, though we have met teams with individual Japanese players.

“This is especially so for our captain, who has played for three different clubs in Thailand and is a regular in our national team.”

Somsack omitted to mention Lamnao’s history with the club, as the 24-year-old had been with them since 1999, when he was only a young prospect and not even in his teens.

The three-year coach Somsack alluded to proved the only interruption in the forward’s career in Laos, and in that time Lamnao represented two Provincial League clubs before moving to Provincial Electric Authority in 2008.

Since returning to his homeland, he has been productive up front, notching 24 goals in the club’s 18-match campaign last year and having 12 to his name in the current league season.

Modestly, as one of the prominent national team players, he could not recall how many he has scored for Laos, though his coach remembered that in the last SEA Games he topped his country’s scoring charts with six goals.

“I think Albirex are going to be a very strong team for us to play,” said Lamnao, turning the focus to the task at hand.

“I will do my best to help the team through to the next round.”

Including Lamnao, there are no fewer than seven national team players in this Yotha side, including goalkeeper Souvanhpheng Phanthavong and talented forward Visay Phaphouvanin.

Currently sitting in fourth place in the 2012 Lao League standings, after playing 14 of their 18 games for the season, the defending champions are one of four major forces in their domestic competition.

Like several other clubs in the country, Yotha are affiliated with a national ministry, in their case the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MPWT), whose logo features on their shirts and equipment.

When formed in 1997 they played as Ministry of Telecom and Transportation, before taking on their current identity in 2011 and taking on a more professional look, complete with a sponsorship by Lao Airlines.

They usually play in yellow shirts and blue shorts, but will be donning their alternative light blue strip with yellow trim and black shorts against Albirex during their Singapore visit.

While doing well here will be very welcome, Somsack made it clear that doing well on the domestic front remained the top priority.

“We are three points off the lead at the moment,” said the 46-year-old.

“We will be playing the leaders, Vientiane Capital, in our final match, and we hope to finish at least second, though winning the title again will be very difficult.

“We all play our games in the same stadium in Vientiane. Most of our games are played at 5pm, under lights, as it gets dark earlier in Vientiane than it does in Singapore.

“We had a game on Wednesday night, so we could only get here on Thursday night, but I didn’t rest any of my players as they are all fit. Only two were suspended so those will be fresh for this game, the goalkeeper and Saynakhonevieng (Phommapanya).”

The team won their midweek match 3-1, so they are currently in decent form.

Somsack is no stranger to Singapore, having competed in the SEA Games here along with his assistant Bounlap, who is even more widely travelled than he is.

Most of the national team players in the squad are not making their first trip to Singapore, but those who are here for the first time seem to be taking the experience in their stride.

“We got in quite late on Thursday night and the players had a good rest; today we will be training at 5pm, then tomorrow we do some stretching at the hotel. It should be enough.”

Initially the Lao team had expected to train at Jurong East on the eve of the game, but they were sent instead to Tampines Stadium, nearer to their temporary base in the eastern part of town.

They will get their feel of the Jurong East pitch soon enough, one feels, although for the Albirex players this match may not come soon enough.

Some of them players had been expecting to go home to Japan for a five-day break around this time, or at least take a short holiday in the local region, but this match, originally scheduled for a week earlier, had to be postponed due to Yotha’s Lao League commitments.

The White Swans will still get their break as soon as they come through this game, and Sugiyama has kept them up to the mark ahead of this important Cup match with some solid training.

As losing finalists last season, the team and their coach are keen to do well in the competition again, though Sugiyama was quick to emphasise that all three trophies are still in his sights.

“We have the disadvantage of the change of date and keeping the players in training longer than we expected, but we’re pleased that all of the players who had booked their airline tickets were able to delay their holiday plans,” said the former Urawa Red Diamonds defender.

“We’d like to especially thank the FAS for helping us make that possible.

“We had a good game against Gombak when we won 1-0 two weeks ago, and after this Cup match we have a few more weeks off.

“Then we play SAFFC at Choa Chu Kang, which we are looking forward to.

“When the players come back we’ll have some intensive training. Our priority is the same for the S.League, the League Cup and the Singapore Cup.

“We would like to try and win all three,” he added optimistically.

“We will play our (own style of) football against this Yotha team, and we will watch the game carefully (as it unfolds). If we need to make tactical changes during the game we will do so.”

The emphasis on playing their usual way was notable for Albirex, who have come up against players who are roughly of the same build as themselves while playing in the S.League.

That will probably change against the Laotians, but Sugiyama, used to setting up a balanced game that makes extensive use of ground play as well as the occasional aerial ball, is keen not to change his formula.

“I don’t really think we have an advantage in height, knowing that the Laotian players are generally small in stature, even if we do have one or two tall players,” he said.

“We do not play to use our height, as that is not important for us.

“We would like to win on Saturday so we can play Tampines Rovers in the next round, but we must win this one first.”

YOTHA FC VS ALBIREX NIIGATA FC(S) IN RHB SINGAPORE CUP 2012

Old rivalries will be renewed and new faces await their chance to take maiden bows in the preliminary round of the RHB Singapore Cup 2012 competition, after the draw was completed at Bugis Junction on a hot and bright Sunday afternoon.

A grand total of 16 sides will feature in this year’s tournament, including three foreign invitee outfits making their first appearances.

The inclusion of Loyola Meralco Sparks means that there will be a Filipino presence in Singapore’s premier football knockout cup tournament for the very first time, while Yotha FC become the first Laotian side to play in the tournament as well.

Also making their debut are Myanmar National League title contenders Kanbawza FC, following the lead of Okkthar United in last year’s competition.

Cambodian side Phnom Penh Crown continue their lengthy association with the competition as well, while Malaysia’s Harimau Muda will be represented by the junior side playing in their country’s Premier League, as their senior counterparts prepare for the AFC Under-22 Asian Cup qualifiers in June.

But the game of the first round will feature another foreign team already playing in the S.League – current leaders DPMM FC of Brunei, who have been drawn against defending champions Home United.

The draw was based on how twelve players, representing eleven S.League clubs and the Harimau Muda junior side, fared at a juggling competition held amid cheers from teammates, supporters and other members of the public spending their afternoon at Bugis.

The competition sorted the twelve teams based on how long their representative players managed to keep the ball off the ground, with Albirex Niigata (Singapore)’s Yutaka Nishi finishing top by lasting the full regulation period of five minutes.

Finishing second was SAFFC’s Erwan Gunawan, while Home fullback Jeremy Chiang had the misfortune of recording the shortest time, placing the Protectors at twelfth seed.

With the juggling competition split into three separate pools, spectators had little idea of the twelve teams’ exact placings, apart from knowing that Albirex were in top spot.

It was only when all the players had finished that the draw tree was unveiled, with each team’s name filled into the appropriate slots as ESPNStar host Colette Wong announced the results of the juggling competition.

Home coach Lee Lim Saeng was positive about the outcome of the draw, as he braced himself for a tough start against the Bruneians.

“I am looking forward to it,” he declared.

“It doesn’t matter whether we had drawn a local team or a foreign one. Of course our draw against the Brunei team is a tough one, but we are out to win the Singapore Cup, and if we overcome the strong teams first, it is an advantage in the later stages.

“I have no knowledge of the four foreign teams, but I hope they are good, strong teams. This will be good for the S.League.”

Albirex, who were losing finalists last year, have been drawn against top-tier side Yotha, who feature numerous Laos internationals, including former Thai Premier League striker Lamnao Singto.

White Swans vice-chairman Koh Mui Tee was happy to face the newcomers, whom he felt will pose a refreshing challenge.

“They are the Lao League champions, and they comprise a few national team players,” he said of Yotha.

“I understand they are one of the best teams in the country. But we will be out to go one better than how we did last year, and we will not take our opponents lightly, whoever they may be.”

Also facing foreign opponents in the opening round are Geylang United, who won the RHB Singapore Cup as recently as 2009.

They meet Loyola, who play in the semi-professional United Football League in the Philippines and boast among their stars two pairs of brothers, the Chelsea-trained Younghusbands and the Portsmouth-trained Hartmanns.

While reigning S.League champions Tampines Rovers and Woodlands Wellington also feature in the same half of the draw as Geylang and Albirex, Kanan Vedhamuthu felt his Eagles were fortunate not to be pooled into the all-S.League half of the draw tree.

“For Geylang, it seems an easier draw than the next group,” commented the 47-year-old.

“The stronger teams from our group look to be Albirex and Tampines, although I am not too certain how strong the four invited teams are. That said, we are not doing so well in the league, so the Cup has become a priority.

“We will respect the team we are drawn against in the first match, and we look to progress from there.

“I have only just come to know they have some key players of calibre and quality, so we will need to be prepared against this Philippine team. We should take nothing for granted.”

Should Geylang beat the Sparks, their quarterfinals opponents will be either Woodlands or Kanbawza, while Tampines have to overcome Phnom Penh Crown if they are to book a slot in the last eight.

The winners of the Home-DPMM clash will face either SAFFC or Balestier Khalsa, while Tanjong Pagar United face Hougang United and Gombak United are paired with the Harimau Muda Under-19s coached by Ismail Ibrahim.

With the first of the preliminary matches scheduled to take place on 14 May, the adrenaline rush of the region’s premier knockout tourney is set to be upon us in another two weeks.
